Cotswolds Part 6 [Originally published Aug. 16, 2021]

Sarah Lugg’s 1st husband was Thomas Clinch, b. 1778, presumably in Avening, Gloucestershire (he was baptized there). He and Sarah were married there in 1803. He died shortly after arriving in America n 1805. By one account, he died in NYC of yellow fever. Another report has him dying in Philadelphia of diphtheria. Regardless, it was within a few months of arriving in Philadelphia. Here’s a drawing of him. [Courtesy of the late Cornelia (Buck) Key.]

ORIGINAL COMMENTS:

Sarah Larson – Is it a drawing or a scissor-cut, paper profile?

William Thompson AuthorAdmin. Probably the latter. What I had is just a Xerox of it, given to me by the late Cornelia (Buck) Key. It was given to her in London by a descendant of Thomas’ youngest sibling, Mary (Clinch) Essex. Mary’s descendants have stayed in touch with their American cousins. See for instance https://campbellluggblackwell.com/LtrMabelMaryEssex188510…. I met one of the Essex’s several times. We have some web pages about them and have material for many more. Cornelia’s father, Joseph Wallace Buck, threw a large dinner party at London’s prestigious Brown’s Hotel, shortly after WW2 for his Essex cousins.

Anne AlexanderModerator. Hey! Neat.
