Cotswolds (Part 10). [published Aug 21, 2021

]t time it was customary for churches to record christenings, but usually births were not recorded. When wool cloth came off a hand loom, it was loosely woven and contained excess hairs and oils. A fulling mill pounded the fabric with large, wooden mallets and rinsed it — the pounding and rinsing tightened the weave. By coincidence, Sarah Lugg’s 3rd husband, John Campbell, also operated a fulling mill, which was inherited by his heir, Enoch Blackwell, Jr.)

Gentleman John Blackwell was a Baptist deacon and a clothier. Resided at Winsoredge near Nailsworth, where he leased a 182-acre Avening estate from Edward Sheppherd, the lord of the manor.

In 1800 “John Blackwell of Nailsworth, clothier”, bought Avening Mill, a cloth-mill on the Avening stream, re-converted it for fulling and conveyed it to William Overbury of Tetbury, wool-stapler, in 1807.
