This small, framed image of the coat of arms of the Campbells of Argyle hung oh a wall of my parent’s living room as far back as I can remember. All of the surviving writings of our “clan” from the late 1800s and into the 20th century seemed to take it as a “given” that our Campbells belong to the Campbells of Argyle branch.
But was it because they had some information, now lost, to base that belief on? Or was it based on lack of information? Was it because they had never heard of the other branches such as Campbells of Cawdor or of Breadalbane or of Loudoun and assumed that all Campbells were Campbells of Argyle?
We may never know, but if any of you run across any evidence that supports their belief (rather than evidence OF their belief), please let us know.
